Year-end tax deduction facts
Dec 31 controls which tax year you claim
For vehicle donations, the IRS looks at the date your car is actually transferred—practically speaking, your pickup date. If your Knoxville pickup is completed by December 31, the donation counts for this calendar tax year. If it happens on January 1 or later, it applies to next year’s return.
Written acknowledgment and IRS Form 1098-C
Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3), will send you a written acknowledgment of your donation. For eligible vehicle donations above IRS thresholds, they also issue Form 1098-C. This form reports the charity’s gross sale price, which is usually the amount you may claim as a deduction, subject to IRS rules.
Deduction is usually based on sale price
In most cases, your allowable deduction is the amount Heritage for the Blind receives when your vehicle is sold, not its original sticker price or an estimate. There are limited exceptions, but generally your final sales price on Form 1098-C is the number you give your tax preparer for your charitable deduction.
Itemizing on Schedule A is required
To benefit from a car donation tax break, you typically must itemize deductions using Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. If you’re unsure whether itemizing makes sense, ask your tax professional or compare both options in your tax software before filing your federal return.
30-day receipt window from the charity
After your Knoxville vehicle is sold or otherwise processed, Heritage for the Blind generally sends your written acknowledgment and any required Form 1098-C within about 30 days of the sale. Keep this with your records in case the IRS ever requests documentation of your charitable vehicle donation.
