Yes, you can donate a car with expired tags in Knoxville

In Knoxville Metro, you can donate a car with expired registration. You don’t need to renew tags or pay back fees. Tennessee Auto Legacy tows it free and you still get a tax receipt.

If your car’s registration has expired, you can still donate it in Knoxville. With Tennessee Auto Legacy, what matters is that you have a valid Tennessee vehicle title in your name — not whether the tags are current. You do NOT have to renew your registration, pay back fees, or get the car roadworthy. We arrange free towing anywhere in the Knoxville Metro, and you still receive a deductible tax receipt benefiting Heritage for the Blind.

Here’s how it works in Tennessee: as long as you can sign over a clear title, we can accept most vehicles, even if the registration is months or years out of date. The car does not need to pass emissions, and it does not have to run — our towing partner picks it up at no cost from your driveway, garage, or curb in places like Fountain City, West Knoxville, Farragut, Powell, Maryville, or Oak Ridge. After you sign the title and hand over the keys (if you have them), responsibility for the vehicle transfers. You should then notify the Tennessee Department of Revenue / county clerk of the transfer so future registration notices and liability are no longer in your name.

How to get your free pickup scheduled

1

1. Check that you have the Tennessee title in your name

For a smooth donation with expired registration, the key is a valid Tennessee title listing you as the owner, not current tags. Find your title in your home files, glove box, or safe. If it’s lost or damaged, contact your local county clerk’s office in Knox County or surrounding counties to request a replacement title before scheduling your pickup.

2

2. Tell us about your car and expired registration

Call or submit our simple online form with your vehicle’s year, make, model, approximate location in Knoxville Metro, and note that the registration has expired. Be honest if it’s been sitting for a long time, won’t start, or has flat tires. Expired tags are normally fine; we just use your description to match you with the right tow provider and plan the pickup safely.

3

3. Schedule free towing anywhere in Knoxville Metro

Once your donation is accepted, Tennessee Auto Legacy arranges a free tow that fits your schedule. We pick up in downtown Knoxville, Bearden, Halls, South Knoxville, Karns, and surrounding communities. Because your tags are expired, you don’t drive the vehicle at all. Our professional tow driver comes to you, loads the car, and has you sign the title at pickup if it’s not already signed.

4

4. Sign the title and release liability

At pickup, you’ll sign the Tennessee title over to Tennessee Auto Legacy according to state requirements. The tow driver will guide you on where to sign, but you remain responsible for accuracy. After pickup, notify your county clerk or Tennessee Department of Revenue that you’ve donated the vehicle so their records show you’re no longer the owner, even though the registration was expired.

5

5. We handle the rest and you get your tax receipt

Once the vehicle is in our hands, Tennessee Auto Legacy handles any transport, sale, or processing — including dealing with the expired registration. You’re done. Within a few weeks, you’ll receive a tax receipt for at least $500, and for amounts above $500 we issue the documentation needed for IRS Form 1098-C. Proceeds support Heritage for the Blind’s services for people who are blind or visually impaired.

Potential complications to watch for

Missing or incorrect name on the Tennessee title

Tip: If the name on the title doesn’t match your current legal name or the person donating, it can slow things down more than expired tags will. Check the title now. If there’s a name change, estate issue, or co-owner, we’ll walk you through what the county clerk may need so the transfer to Tennessee Auto Legacy is clean and accepted.

Active loans or liens still listed on the title

Tip: If a bank or finance company is listed as a lienholder, we usually can’t complete the donation until that lien is released, even if the registration is expired. Look at the front of your title for any lien information. If present, contact the lender or clerk’s office to obtain a lien release document so the vehicle can be donated without problems.

Out-of-state titles or different registration state

Tip: If your title is from another state but the car is now sitting in Knoxville with expired tags, we can often still accept it. The rules depend on that state’s title format. Let us know where the title was issued, and we’ll clarify the exact signing instructions so the transfer to Tennessee Auto Legacy is valid and recognized.

No keys or completely immobile vehicle

Tip: Not having keys or having a car that’s been sitting for years isn’t a deal-breaker, but it can change how the tow truck loads it. Let us know if the car won’t start, has locked wheels, or is stuck in a tight driveway. We’ll schedule the right type of truck and plan ahead so pickup in your Knoxville neighborhood goes smoothly.

FAQ

Do I have to renew my expired registration before donating?
No. In Knoxville and across Tennessee, you do not need to renew expired tags or pay late fees to donate your car. For Tennessee Auto Legacy, the important document is a valid title in your name. We tow the car without you driving it, so current registration and emissions are not required for the donation to go through.
Can you tow a car that hasn’t been registered for years?
Yes. We regularly pick up vehicles that have been sitting unregistered for a long time in driveways, parking lots, and garages around Knoxville Metro. Whether it’s been off the road for months or several years, Tennessee Auto Legacy arranges free towing. Just tell us where it’s parked and what condition it’s in so we can send the right truck.
What if my tags are expired and the car doesn’t run?
That combination is fine. Your car can have expired registration and be non-running; you still don’t have to renew anything. Tennessee Auto Legacy sends a professional tow truck directly to your location in areas like North Knoxville, South Knoxville, or West Hills. We load the vehicle, complete the title transfer, and you receive your tax receipt afterward.
Will I still get a tax deduction with expired registration?
Yes. The status of your registration doesn’t affect your eligibility for a charitable deduction. Once Tennessee Auto Legacy receives the vehicle, we send you a tax receipt for at least $500. If the final sale amount is over $500, we provide the additional information you’ll need to complete IRS Form 1098-C for your federal tax return.
Am I still liable for tickets or fees after I donate?
You remain responsible for anything that occurred while you owned the car, but once you sign over the title and it’s picked up, the vehicle becomes our responsibility. To protect yourself, notify your county clerk or the Tennessee Department of Revenue that you’ve donated the vehicle. This helps ensure future registration notices or tickets aren’t tied to your name.
What if I can’t find my Tennessee title but my tags are expired?
We need a title to complete the donation; expired tags alone aren’t a problem. If the title is lost, contact your local county clerk’s office in Knox County or your home county and request a replacement title. Once you receive it in the mail, you can schedule your free pickup with Tennessee Auto Legacy and donate without renewing the registration.
Can I donate a car that’s titled in Tennessee but parked outside Knoxville?
Yes. Tennessee Auto Legacy offers free pickup statewide and even beyond, as long as we can safely access the vehicle. Your Tennessee title with your name is what matters. Just let us know the current location and that the registration is expired. We’ll coordinate towing there, and your donation will still support Heritage for the Blind’s programs.
